we're starting to see, i think, some foreshadowing of where this is going or how it's going to come to a head, and probably how it's going to end. this was an interesting one, while still being a fun adventure. ( )

Rate 3.5. Enjoyed this one quite a bit, probably because it had a cool prophecy, interesting history, and awesome escaping. ( )

All the How To Train Your Dragon books are great. Fun, amusing, interesting, page turning, with a hero who has to both be clever and be kind to save the day. But this is the point where the series takes a step up from the episodic and enjoyable first half, to the main plot of the Dragon Rebellion, and where the characters who have enlightened the pages with their charming cameos start to weave together in a bigger picture.

This book starts with them searching for Camicazi, and finding the lost throne of the Wilderwest. Where Hiccup covers for Fishlegs (who has written a Love Poem) and so gets sent off on a quest, where he finds Camicazi locked in a tree by Berserkers, meets the terrible mother of Alvin the Terrible, hears the story of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Second, and, in a moment of great crisis, frees the Dragon Furious, who breaks his promise and swears to return in one year with a mighty dragon rebellion to destroy all humans. As if that isn't enough, there are subplots of Humungous Hottshot learning that you can love truely and twice, and Fishlegs discovering that sometimes your home by adoption is still truly your home. Someone from the Hooligan tribe has been writing love letters to UG the Uglithug's daughter, a crime punishable by death, and when Hiccup realizes that Fishlegs is responsible, he takes on the task himself to save his friend. Although a little darker than the previous books, it is still another fun installment with it silly jokes, heart-felt scenes, and a lot of shenanigans. David Tennant is a great reader for the audio book. ( )
