Simon is an OWNO (Orphan With No Options). He lives with his deranged grandfather and a horrible housekeeper, Griselda, who punishes him by making him trim her toenails with his teeth. Unable to remember anything about his mother or father, Simon is haunted by a dream of an eagle, a serpent and an angel that smells like bubblegum. Then, one night, his dreams change. The angel gives him a special object that is still with him when he wakes up. An object that is desired by many, but destined only for him...… (mere)

I don’t know how to describe Smudge’s Mark. At first it seems like a dark and spooky mystery, then shifting into the fantasy genre. Don’t worry the fantasy element is introduces early on. The story does start out creepy as well.

The plot starts out slow, later picking up one all the characters are established. There is a fantasy quest with a few twist to it.

I like the relationship between all the characters and the sarcastic humor. The world building is basic, not must is said about Emogen. Another thing I don’t understand is why was Maximilien at the school and how did he end up talking to Smudge through the mirror.

The story ending is wrap up. There a big setup for there to be a squeal. A strange story I hope gets a squeal. ( )

Inconsistent in a way that looked like it might have been interesting for a while - but no, it's just inconsistency. Gave up round about the point where the orphaned child has his world-saving quest explained to him. ( )

Smudge's Mark was an okay juvenile fiction book. The plot wasn't especially new—involving specially chosen heroic orphans, elemental magic, mystical alternate realms, and bad guys who spell out their every action—and the main character wasn't especially compelling. The ending sets the book up for a sequel. We'll see how it goes. ( )
