Review by: Mikie

The book I read is Dogsong by Gary Paulsen. There are 3 parts in the book. The three parts are The Trance, the Dreamrun and the Dogsong. The story takes place in the arctic. The characters are Eskimos. The main character is a boy name Russel.
Russel was unhappy so he went to Oogruck and they talked. Russel and Oogruck talked about hunting and Russel went to hunt. Russel ran the sled dogs and it was his first time. Oogruck told a story about hunters who died from getting lost in the ice. Russel is worried about getting lost in the ice. Oogruck told Russel to leave him behind and Oogruck died in the ice.
Russel ran with the dogs so he could hunt for his village. He dreamed that he was hunting a Wooly Mammoth. Russel found an old lamp under the snow. He was learning and he was growing. Every time he dreamed, it was about the past or hunting. Russel killed a bear with a spear and he got a lot of meat. Russel found Nancy in middle of the ice dying while he was heading back to the village. Nancy was pregnant and her baby died. Russel took Nancy north because he needed to find a doctor.
Part three was a poem called Dogsong. The poem talked about Russel’s sled dogs. The Dogsong told about Russel's life.
This book was great. I liked the parts about the runs but the dreams were boring. I recommend whoever likes adventure to read this book but if you like a lot of action I do not recommend this book because some parts are boring.

"Dogsong" gave me a great sensation when I read the book. It was action packed and every chapter was something new, not the same old thing over and over. It was full of outdoor adventure learing, hunting, surviving and finding your song. For anyone who wants an outdoors book with a good plot and easy to read font, this is a nice solution. I love gary paulsen books and the adventures he tells of his life and the things he has experienced.

I liked this book because of the characters and he developed them while writing this book. The determination that russell had was strong enough to drive him to succeed in his goal of finding his song. Also it teaches young adults to thrive for what they want whether it is big or little. ( )
