"The Vampire Council of New Orleans has hired Jane to hunt and kill one of their own who has broken sacred ancient rules. But she quickly realizes that in a community that is thousands of years old, loyalties run deep. With the help of her witch best friend and local vigilantes, Jane finds herself caught between bitter rivalries--and closer than ever to the secret origin of the entire vampire race. But in a city of old grudges and dark magic, Jane will have to fight to protect both sides, even if no one will protect her."--P.[4] of cover.… (mere)

Not as good as the first but still good enough to keep reading the series... ( )

The origin story of the vampires was interesting! I'm not entirely happy with the way that this one went at the end for Jane's love life, but I guess I've got 10 more books to go, so anything could happen. ( )

The series is getting better and no longer quite follows the paths already trailblazed by many other UFs. That's not to say that it doesn't borrow heavily from one source or another, because it does, but HOW it is all put together means everything.

And I likey.

The writing is quite fun and the pacing is particularly delicious, but it's the worldbuilding, the history of the magic users, and especially the vampires that make this stand out. For all you other kinds of fans of the genre who are in it for the sexytimes, there's plenty here to enjoy, but for me, I appreciated how judicious it was applied. We weren't thrown into deadly battles only to get naked in the next moment without good reason or consideration of circumstance. WEIRD, no?

I'm really enjoying the series. I love the implications. I also can't help but wonder if it borrowed from Jim Butcher's earlier take on demons and applied it to vampires, but that's okay. The ideas are still COOL.

Continuation of Skinwalker, very interesting after the end of the world story. Definite recommend

This book failed somewhat to engage me. It is not a bad book but it kind of just recites the story without really adding that little extra that makes you really want to read the next page. I think that the main reason is that the heroin somehow lacks charisma, at least for me. She just goes from one page to another solving the problems as they are coming along. The dialogue is often a wee bit on the dull side. She is a strong person, even though she gets sucker punched every so often, but she could definitely do with a bit more attitude and sharp tongue to spice up the story.

The author have tried to put some humorous parts in there but some of them just felt silly to me. For instance the Marilyn Monroe part really felt cheap. Then we of course have the fact that our heroine manages to get herself almost killed every so often. It is a fault that many authors do and it is just tiresome to me.

Other parts where quite good though. The explanation as to why vampires do not show up on photos, or rather did not show up, where quite okay. The author also produced a quite interesting tie-in between vampires and Christian mythology.

On the whole it was a read worthy book but only just so. There are ten main books in the series so I guess there are enough people liking the books though so I will continue reading a few more books in the series in the hope that it will improve as we go along. This is just the second book after all and it was not until the fourth book in The Dresden Files that I really started to like that series so fingers crossed.
