Robert Crais has the ability to capture your attention in the first five pages and not let go until the end.

Frank Meyer, his wife and children, and their nanny are murdered by a home invasion crew. Meyer is a former member of Joe Pike’s mercenary team and his son Joey was Pike’s namesake. Although they haven’t talked in over 10 years, Meyer is still one of Joe’s guys and Joe will not rest until Frank is avenged.

Pike quickly learns that the mastermind behind the raid is Michael Darko, boss of a Serbian criminal organization operating in Los Angeles. Learning the name of the culprit easy; finding Darko is more challenging. No one has a picture of him, no one knows where he lives, and no one knows how to contact him. In fact, virtually no one even knows what he looks like.

Cleverly plotted and effectively paced, there is hardly a dull moment in this thriller. Pike quickly identifies the home invasion crew but before he can question them they are murdered. Pike and Cole work their way up the chain but encounter one dead end after another. Pike’s solution: create so much hell that Darko is forced find him.

That solution leads to another problem. Two Serbian crime families are engaged in a war for supremacy and the Meyer family is essentially collateral damage.

The First Rule is an interestingly plotted action thriller and an excellent mystery. The roadblocks Crais throws in the path of Pike and Cole are ingenious and readers will be challenged to think of solutions. Who did it and why they did it only gradually becomes clear as Pike and Cole dig deeper and deeper.

The climax seemed somewhat pedestrian and I was quite disappointed, but don’t be fooled. Crais’ springs a clever surprise in the final pages. The surprise is foreshadowed in multiple ways but I didn’t see it coming. Well done! ( )

LA setting — Joe Pike Mercenary vs Serbia group

Frank Meyer had the American dream-until the day a professional crew invaded his home and murdered everyone inside. The only thing out of the ordinary about Meyer was that- before the family and the business and the normal life-a younger Frank Meyer had worked as a professional mercenary, with a man named Joe Pike. The police think Meyer was hiding something very bad, but Pike does not. With the help of Cole, he sets out on a hunt of his own-an investigation that quickly entangles them both in a web of ancient grudges, blood ties, blackmail, vengeance, double crosses, and cutthroat criminality, and at the heart of it, an act so terrible even Pike and Cole have no way to measure it. Sometimes, the past is never dead. It's not even past.

Whenever Robert Crais feels the need to refresh himself, he can always activate Joe Pike, a saturnine former soldier who performs id-like functions for Elvis Cole, the Hollywood private eye who is Crais’s regular series hero.
