This is a great book. Zoey is a strong character and always lives up to her promises. Stevie Rae was a nice girl and it is upsetting that she doesn't make it through the Change into a vampyre, and dies. She hasn't really die though, just turns into a living-dead creature (not that vampyres aren't) but she's sort of like a zombie. Zoey, of course, won't give up on her when she finds her whilst saving Heath (one of her boyfriends) from the zombie-like creatures.
Zoey receives more of her special marks after she saves Heath, and she plans to try to get Stevie Rae back to House of Night.
Zoey finds out that Neferet is the one turning the vampyres into the zombie-like creatures, and the on murdering off all of the human boys, and she is devastated.
Just before Stevie Rae dies, goddess Nyx gives Stevie Rae the affinity for Earth, Shaunee the affinity for fire, Erin the affinity for water, and Damien the affinity for air. Zoey has the affinity for all four elements but she also has the affinity for spirit. When Stevie Rae dies, Aphrodite takes Stevie Rae's spot in the ritual.

I did think think this book was better than the first. The death scene in particular was gut wrenching. However, I still found it very problematic. For starters, the slut shaming and general woman bashing still continues even while this book poses as a feminist, empowering book. Then, there's Damien and Jack. Cute that Damien is finding someone but really? Playing into the "there are only two gays in this book, let's make them an item without showing any emotional attachment or building of a relationship." Then we have Aphrodite, who is by far, my favorite character. She is clearly aligning herself with Zoey's side/Circle/against Nefert and helps save not only Grandma but Heath, and yet Zoey is still calling her a hag and a ho? Not to mention Zoey is juggling 3 guys so she is being incredibly hypocritical. And Loren fucking Blake. How inappropriate? A teacher and a student, an adult WITH A LITERAL 16 YEAR OLD. Need I say more? Also why do her two sibling literally never cross her mind? There were some interesting plot developments (although considering it has only been a month, maybe two at this time, it's all happening rather quickly.) Considering this is a book mainly directed at teens (I read this for the first time in middle school.) It has some severely inappropriate topics and just bad lessons for young girls. ( )

A little better than the first one, I don't think the dumbed-down teen speak is improving, I think I'm just getting used to it. Only reading because I'm interested in seeing where the plot goes, I'm not invested in any characters. ( )

Again, I read this back in 2009.
I remember enjoying it buuuut, Zoey is kind of a jerk, most of my memories are about her being awful. The side characters were better. ( )

We would like to dedicate this book to (Aunty) Sherry Rowland, friend and publicist. Thank you, Sher, for taking care of us. Even when we're high maintenance and annoying (and especially when you give us "treaties"). We heart you very much.

"New kid, check it out," Shaunee said as she slid into the big booth-like bench we always claim as ours for every school meal served in the dining hall (translation: high-class school cafeteria).

Still question'd me the story of my life
From year to year, the battles, sieges, fortunes
That I have pass'd."

"She wish'd she had not heard it, yet she wish'd
That heaven had made her such a man; she thank'd me,
And bade me, if I had a friend that lov'd her,
I should but teach him how to tell my story,
And that would woo her. Upon this hint I spake:
She lov'd me for the dangers I had pass'd,
And I lov'd her that she did pity them."

" 'I have no name,

What shall I call thee?
'I happy am,
Joy is my name.'
Sweet joy befall thee!"
