I think I need to add 'authors plugging their new books on TV' to the reasons why I am such a book whore. After watching a five minute interview with Bob and Carol Bridgestock on a local news programme, my immediate reaction was to download the first novel on Kindle. Well, they are - or were - local authors, is my excuse! After a fairly shaky start, to be expected of most debut novels, Deadly Focus eventually picked up pace and credibility to become a powerful and very real story about two child murders in a small Yorkshire community. The detective, Jack Dylan, is your standard police procedural cliché - all gruffness, relationship issues and coffee - but Bob Bridgestock's 30 years experience as a CID officer really elevates the otherwise plodding (pardon the pun) standard of writing. I was nearly in tears during the scenes with the children's families (although I am a soft touch anyway), and could tell that the author must have gone through all of Dylan's professional anguish many times over during his long career. Sometimes the detective keeps me coming back, but I think this time the author(s) might persuade me into reading more of this series. Not great, but definitely gripping. Deadly Focus is the first novel in the DI Dylan series by author RC Bridgestock. When a young girl disappears DI Jack Dylan is called into investigate. The body of the missing girl turns up dead and Dylan must try and solve the crime before the murderer strikes again. This book is heavy on the police procedure. Fans of ITV's Scott & Bailey TV series might well enjoy this book. Indeed this takes up more of the book than the actual crime itself. Read the full review here I really enjoyed this book! So much so that I was almost speed reading the last 20% of it as I was desperate to find out what happened. The main character Dylan is really good and I loved the relationship with his 'secret' partner Jen. Totally empathised with her frustration. Only a bloke could justify why the relationship had to be secret when both parties are free and single haha! The reason for the crimes was well disguised until almost the very end and well explained, so many books these days seem to give you a bizarre 'this is why he did it - the end. All the characters were well fleshed out, and the reactions of the relatives of the victims gave me pause. End was good when Dylan finally got his priorities right! Just off to get the second in the series. ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse

Deadly Focus is the first of a series introducing the reader to DI Jack Dylan. Dylan is a senior investigating officer tasked with hunting down Daisy's killer. As the book unwinds, Dylan is faced with another dead child. It starts to look like a child serial killer is on the loose and Dylan and his team are afraid there may be more victims in the future if they can't quickly find the killer. The plot seems like a familiar one but the way it's written we don't have any hints about who the killer is until Dylan makes the connection to the motive.
We are also introduced to his “too good to be true” girlfriend, Jen. She works at the police station and they are trying to keep their relationship under wraps. I found her to be the most unbelievable character in the book. She holds down a full time job, takes care of their home and their dog, and cooks fantastic meals for Dylan every time he comes home, no matter the time and without a harsh word, ever. Seems a little too Stepford Wife to me. I believe she was added because the writing team that makes up RC Bridgestock is comprised of Bob Bridgestock, a 30-year CID veteran and his wife Carol. Carol coauthors and writes the love scenes and personal relationships.
I don't know that I'm curious enough about these bland characters to pick up the next book in the series called Consequences. I didn't dislike the book. There's just nothing there to compel me to pick up the next one.
