Not my favorite, informative about the dewey decimal system. Helpful to share with children so they can understand the number system in libraries. ( )

With the help of the eclectic librarian, students are led through a lesson plan (friendly competition) that teaches them about the Dewey Decimal System. A system which organizes books based on category. Using objects emblematic of each category, allows them to easily identify where it is a book should be shelved. The grand prize is the missing book. This book would be perfect for a school media specialist to use in conjunction with lessons on the Dewey Decimal System. I could see myself using it for a school group tour, especially if they were going to go on a DDC scavenger hunt while visiting. ( )

The librarian has decked herself out in Dewey Decimal numbers. She sets the children in teams to hunt down great books in their section of the Dewey numbers. Fourth graders mentor second graders. The librarians sets around artifacts, realia, or stuffed toys to give clues to where books on specific topics shoud go. Nice pictures, good ideas but reads more like a cookbook than story book to share with children.

"The Great Dewey Hunt" is the third title in a series designed by author Toni Buzzeo to teach grade school children about how to use the Dewey Decimal system in a library. Led by librarian/teacher Mrs. Skorupski, second, third and fourth -graders learn to work in teams to uncover the mysterious codes of the Dewey Decimal System. Collecting and using special objects like a Buddha statue, Cinderella snow globe, a hairy tarantula spider, a sailboat, and theater masks, the students pick their way through the number categories for all books filed in the library. A snag in the game helps students learn what to do when they find a misfiled book, and competition is hot to the end. Different ages are encouraged to find constructive ways to team up and work together and cooperation rules the day when the game comes to a dramatic finish with the flipping of the ten Dewey Decimal flags (with number categories 000-900) to reveal (Ta-Da!) "I Love Dewey!" An enclosed lesson format suggestion handout is available for duplication and further learning activities. Sachiko Yoshikawa's exciting colorful illustrations keep the tempo up and pace racing. Who says libraries are boring? All the best books are there! "The Great Dewey Hunt" is a vibrant tool to unlock library exploration skills in elementary age students.
