A medieval adventure tale that moves along briskly and keeps the reader caring about the colorful cast of characters.

This was quite a neat little fantasy written for younger readers. I liked the characters (which is always a good start) and the plot was in sure hands. Davren the centaur was great, but I kind of didn't get the point of the other magical creatures. But overall, a good read. ( )

I liked this a lot, until the end. The ending felt a bit rushed and the Epilogue seemed to jam too much happily-ever-after into just three or so pages. But, I don't think these things will be an issue for the target audience. They wouldn't have been an issue for me if I hadn't enjoyed the story and characters so much and been willing and eager to spend more time with them. ( )

This was an enjoyable read for younger teenagers. Filled with adventure, mystical creatures, mind speaking and magical forces, the story is well paced and the characters likeable as good battles evil. The alternating perspectives, from the two main characters, Griff and Lute, work well and keep the reader engaged. However, the story does end rather quickly considering all the danger that Griff, Lute and their friends face throughout the book, but overall an entertaining fantasy. ( )

In this book, a boy named Griff works at a traveling show for an avaricious man named Tyren. Of course, Tyren wants everything to be a surprise but what he is about to hear will surprise him himself. Griff, who happens to have a special ability, opens up to Tyren and tells him of his special ability: he can hear thoughts. Once Tyren knows of this, he secretly makes Griff his "tool" to make money. Griff now makes an escape. While escaping, he hears a cry for help that only he can hear. What will Griff do? Most importantly, who is it? I had lots of questions running through my mind as I read this. I loved reading this story. I recommend this book to people who love adventures and for people who have interest in stories that need deep understanding.
