I read this as warmup for Grisham's new Sycamore book, and I was really disappointed. The legal stuff was naive, the bad guys (KKKers) had zero depth. Ridiculous relationships, and an emotional argument in the end that the lawyer hadn't thought of making??? ( ![]() This one was really good. Hard to believe it was John Grisham first novel. This is a legal thriller and much more. The story took place in Mississippi. Two rednecks rape a ten year old black girl. Her father shot them dead in front of the courthouse and Jake Brigance is the criminal defense attorney who represented him. I really like this book although it drags a little at times. Audio was great despite the info said Michael Beck is the narrator I think it was Grover Gardner (The Stand - Stephen King, Andy Carpenter series). A Time To Kill is John Grisham's first book in a long line of legal thrillers. The story takes place in the small, rural town of Clanton, Mississippi, where racial tensions race out of control following the heinous rape and beating of Tonya Hailey, a ten-year-old black girl. Mr. Grisham doesn't hold back on racial slurs or narratives of black and white prejudices that prevailed across the south in the 1980s. The characters are flawed, sometimes disgusting, but often endearing. This powerful story of racial injustice will tug at your heartstrings over and over as Jake Brigance struggles with the legal system, the KKK, and drunk colleagues to pull off the impossible—getting Carl Lee Hailey acquitted for a double murder committed on the steps of the courthouse. I have seen the 1996 movie starring Matthew McConaughey, Samuel L. Jackson, and Sandra Bullock—which I loved—so I wanted to read the book. Surprisingly, I liked the screenplay a little bit better—especially the end. The book is slightly wordy, though still entertaining and hard to put down once started.
