Teacher librarians pride themselves as being instructional designers with a deep understanding of instructional technology that boosts learning. Yet, there is a sister field, out there of technology that we may not consult as often as we should. Thus, the need to consult the experts in instructional design represented in this collection of essays. You won’t find the basic and essential articles on Google that are in this colletion. You won’t find a collection of the experts in educational technology that are in this book. This book will give you the background you need to operate in a world that straddles both information and technology. Anglin’s book is often used as a textbook for masters and doctoral students of instructional technology to build their theory base. So, you want to know the authoritative scoop? Consult this source; learn the lingo, grasp the ideas, and you will be able to talk their talk and translate those ideas into the real world of your school. An essential read.

The third edition of this book, this update is providing even more elements of instructional design using technologies that will enhance design at this level. It, like its previous editions, is a compendium of information dealing with the significant issues and professionals in this ever changing field. Not a read for students, it is an important read for professionals, presenting the latest information about philosophical concerns over computer applications in teaching and learning. There is good research to back the assertions made in this book and it talks about how to advance knowledge in education around instructional technology as well as ways to advance oneself with continuing education.
Bottom line: This book is well organized by topic. While it will date quickly, the philosophical content of why continues to be of great relevancy even when the applications date. Excellent and thought-provoking. Highly recommended.
