(7.5) As others have said some very unlikable women in this story. We are introduced to three generations of women in one family. Their lies and lack of concern for one another result in life changing moments. What this author does do well is the historical setting and despite the unpleasant characters I found myself caught up in the unfolding events. ( )

The story is basically about the lives of six women, two each from three generations of a family and to a small degree the men who shared their lives. The author switches between the generations throughout the story, which is easy to read and interesting in its coverage of the history, spanning two world wars and more recent times. The characters, however, were all very sour & unlikeable.Their relationships with each other, within their families, appeared to lack any warmth or affection, only feeling pleased at the others unhappiness, in fact in many cases being the cause of it.The author also left me feeling frustrated as some questions raised in the story were never brought to a conclusion. I guess it was a good read, but I can't say I liked it. ( )

This was a great, thought provoking book. It intertwines three stories about three pairs of sisters over three different time periods in London. What I really liked was how the author hinted and led the reader to make certain conclusions about what actually happened, rather than 'in your face'.
We have Jennifer and Charlotte in the 1980s/current period, their mother Deirdre and Caroline in WWII and their grandmother Bertha and her sister Jemima during the 1920s. All the characters are well written and each time period is extensively researched.
An excellent book! ( )
