I can honestly say I liked twilight before it became a hype. The books are fun to read and they triggered the whole YA vampire/wolf thing, so we all like them in a way. I just hate what the hype & media did to the books. Now it's all kirsten, pattinson & shrieking fangirls. Besides all that the books were ok. Reading this first book in the Twilight series was my 'come-back' to reading after not having read more than just a few pages of a fiction novel for a few months. As I looked over my shelf of 'to-reads' the other day I found myself thinking that Twilight might be the perfect book to get back in the reading mood - after all it has made a lot of my 'non-reading' friends actually read; and not only this first book but the rest of the series. In this review I will not get into the details of what this book is about since I think it is impossible to have missed this even if you - like me - have been trying to avoid all the fuss. I must say my expactations weren't high. To use a word Meyer seems to enjoy a lot I was pretty 'incredoulus' about this book. I normally stay away from hyped books untill the hype wears of a bit to make sure that I will be able to form an honest opinion about it, not feeling obligated to like it just because everyone else does. So with all this in the back of my mind I opened my paperback edition of Twilight and was imidiatly taken in. The first night I only read a few pages (30 or so) but I liked the way Stephanie Meyer wrote and wanted to read more. I was lucky to have some reading time within the next two days and I spent it all on Twilight. I've heard this book compared to great love stories like Titanic and Romeo and Juliet. I am not really into comparing books like that but I will tell you I enjoyed this book so much more than Romeo and Juliet or Harry Potter (just to find something that is a little closer to the genre and also wellknown). I am dying to get my hands on 'New Moon', the next book in the series to see if it will fill me with the same longing for Edward, identification with Bella and lots of 'awww' and heart skipping moments of excitement, fright and thrill. Twilight certainly has it all and I ended up being just as hyped as everyone else.
"Meyer's prose seldom rises above the serviceable, and the plotting is leaden" [....] "It's like reading a young teenage girl's blog" Astonishing, mainly for the ineptitude of her prose. Teen vampire schlock that has the nation’s youth in thrall. [L]et me say to you as a meat-eating, Entourage-watching, sports-loving (OK, I really don't love sports, or actually understand sports) — heterosexual man who can't sit through a single show on Lifetime television, let me loudly proclaim: I, Brad Meltzer, love the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer. I confess, I have joined the legions of the bitten and smitten. The plot may sound rather comic and camp, but Meyer chooses to play it straight and serious. Vampires or not, what this novel is really about is a fatal attraction to someone or something dangerously different from yourself. The trajectory of the story is such that Bella's behavior and choices grow increasingly more disturbing, with irrevocable, self-destructive consequences. No library descriptions found. |
