The font is tiny and there’s a lot packed onto every page. It’s better than Spoto’s Notorious because it gives a sense of the whole person and how she wanted what she couldn’t ever find. Leamer seems less enamored of his subject than other authors, although the book never becomes sleazy. If anything, there's a lot of sadness here: not tragedy, not heartbreak, but sadness. Of all Ingrid Bergman's classic roles, none was as dramatic as her own life. Once the greatest star in the world, she followed her heart into the biggest celebrity scandal in postwar film history, only to return triumphant and once again enshrined. As Time Goes By is the stunning and sometimes shocking story of a woman of fierce ambition and strong desires, a story of love and lust, of public image and private truth. It is a detailed psychological and social portrait of an Ingrid Bergman the world does not know existed. In two years of research Laurence Leamer interviewed almost everyone who knew Ingrid: family members, fellow stars, directors, lovers and friends; the result is a book studded with news making revelations, a tale of monumental success, struggle, scandal, and sorrow. As Time Goes By is the definitive biography of a timeless star. No library descriptions found. |
