Composed of a series of unpublished letters between Julio Cort#65533;zar, his wife Carol Dunlop, and the translator Silvia Monr#65533;s-Stojakovic, this volume presents three first-rate writers at their most unguarded and very best. Cort#65533;zar is Cort#65533;zar, of course; Monr#65533;s-Stojakovic proves herself an agile and witty writer, offering insights into the tense social and political situation in Belgrade in the early 1980s; and Dunlop, coauthor with Cort#65533;zar of Autonauts of the Cosmoroute, writes in a hesitant but highly evocative Spanish, revealing details that will be of particular interest to Cort#65533;zar aficionados. The letters unspool a narrative thread of high literary value--a story in which Cort#65533;zar and Dunlop are the protagonists--and provides previously unknown biographical details. They also serve as a unique testament to the unbridled passion that the three writers felt for literature and life.… (mere)
