The true measure of an encyclopedia's worth must be how useful it is to the general reader at whom it is aimed, not to the expert. Any prospective reader consulting the "Webster's New World Encyclopedia" is therefore asked to look, not only at a subject they are familiar with but also at a topic about which they know little or nothing. Does the entry inform? Does it include up-to-date facts and figures? Is it accurate? Does it provide a useful introduction to the subject? Is it easy to understand? If relevant, is there a helpful illustration? If the answer to all these questions is yes, then the encyclopedia can be judged a success. A friend of my father's gave this to me when I was little (five or six). If you knew me, you'd understand why this was an appropriate gift. I was constantly running to this book to look up everything I could. ( )
