This book is directed towards the reader as being the main participant in the story. It is engaging with it's use of poetry and illustrations to demonstrate that there are all kinds of families. No one family is the same, and they all go together well. This book also seems to follow the theme of looking and searching out items listed within the poems. I am sure that young people would enjoy the fun of searching and interacting with the details within the story. ( )

This book has sweet colorful illustrations to help explain all kinds of different groups that can be found. Attempts to explain what makes up a family are a bit confusing. ( )

Summary: All Kinds of Families is a poetry book about how all different people, animals, creatures, and collections can be considered a family- from a knife, fork and spoon, to socks in a drawer. There is a repeated phrase of, "bottle caps, gingersnaps, buttons or rings, you can make families from all sorts of things!"

Personal Connection: I liked how this book shows that families can come in all sorts of groupings and kinds. It doesn't hit as much on different kinds of PEOPLE families that I was hoping it would, but is a nice, short, and sweet way to show that a family can be all different sorts of things.

Application to Teaching: This book would work well in a unit on families and provides good exposure to a form of poetry! Could of course be used in a poetry unit, or a unit on seasons/nature as the text explores different kinds of families in nature as well. ( )

All Kinds of Families is a book about the different types of families that can be found in the world. It talks briefly abut family in regards to people, and focuses on inanimate objects being able to belong to a family. The grade level best suited for this book would be 2nd grade. The main message is there are all different kinds of families and not just one definition of the word! In my opinion, I found the book to be a good read because of its rhyme scheme, illustrations, and creativity. The book is a rhyming book. It follows an ABCB rhyme scheme—it has almost of a song like sound. For example, “If you’re a second one born in your family/ someone is a brother because you arrive/ or someone’s a sister, and you are a sister/ or brother the moment you are alive.” Secondly, the book supplies full page illustrations that are full of colors. Colors tend to be bold and vibrant. For example, on the page where playdough is mentioned, there is a full-page illustration of colorful objects brought to life such as a pink cat and a brown bear. Lastly, the book is all around creative and fun. Someone objects it lists as being able to have a family include: bottlecaps, thimbles, playdough, spools, tools, peas, and gingersnaps. ( )

First thing that interested me the second I read this book was the way the text of the story strives for inclusiveness in talking about families. The second thing that interested me throughout this book was the soft engaging Illustrations augments in this story. Overall the use of diverse and ethnic background families with the use of text and illustrations engrosses people into the story, and in turn they are never bored with the book.
