Speaker for the Dead af Orson Scott Card (1986)

  1. 21
The Sparrow af Mary Doria Russell (sturlington)
sturlington: Also about first contact with an alien civilization that humans cannot understand.
  2. 10
City of Pearl af Karen Traviss (saltmanz)
saltmanz: These two books have quite a lot in common: first contact, a Christian human colony, a group of scientists, moral dilemmas, sharply drawn characters, and even more that I won't get into for fear of spoilers. Both fantastic books.

Ender’s Game is one of those rare books that grip you from the very beginning and doesn’t let go till the end. It was visceral, brainy, and ultimately thought-provoking. Its sequel has a massive legacy to live up to, but damn, it blew me away. Speaker for the Dead is a much better book. That’s not an overstatement.

While EG focused on Ender’s development as a tactician and person, SftD is more meditative. It’s reflected heavily in the tone, which is slowed down and more contemplative. Ender is a much more mature person now, illustrated heavily through his relationships with his sister, Jane, and those around him. The other characters, although difficult to follow at the beginning, are fleshed out through their interactions with Ender. Particular scenes stand out due to their hilarious nature. But it’s Card’s sober handling of human relationships that steals the show at the end of the day.

I also loved his depiction of the aliens. Whereas most authors would stick to physical descriptions only, Card focuses on their society and culture, depicting aliens who are much more complex and, as a result, interesting. Their interactions and relationships with humans emphasize their differences, making for an exciting read. I loved their utterly alien biology and the resulting culture. Card handles this quite brilliantly, making for one of the most original aliens I’ve read in literature.

Religion plays a central role in the narrative. Ender presents the rational, ‘atheist’ point of view, highlighting the often irrational, exclusive nature of organized religion. However, Card never shows Catholicism in a bad light, instead focusing his energy towards developing a viable society that can coexist with other human colonies. The politics on display was unquestionably striking.

SftD is a mature, sober tale that is miles ahead of EG. I wish I’d read this sooner. Go pick this up right now; you won’t regret it. ( )

This is a great book, if you can keep reading. I wanted it to be done, but there was still more story. Ender is a fascinating character and is written as such an understanding guy. Makes you want to really know him. As with all the Orson Scott Card books, you will become one with characters and enjoy your reading. ( )

Good, but not as good as Ender's Game.
I like this rating system by ashleytylerjohn of LibraryThing (https://www.librarything.com/profile/ashleytylerjohn) that I have also adopted:
(Note: 5 stars = rare and amazing, 4 = quite good book, 3 = a decent read, 2 = disappointing, 1 = awful, just awful.) ( )

Dune meets Care Bears meets Her. Huge letdown; hard to believe that he wrote Ender’s Game - possibly the greatest military sci-fi story of all times - merely to set the stage for this. ( )

Since we are not yet fully comfortable with the idea that people from the next village are as human as ourselves, it is presumptuous in the extreme to suppose we could ever look at sociable, tool-making creatures who arose from other evolutionary paths and see not beasts but brothers, not rivals but fellow pilgrims journeying to the shrine of intelligence.

No human being, when you understand his desires, is worthless. No one’s life is nothing. Even the most evil of men and women, if you understand their hearts, had some generous act that redeems them, at least a little, from their sins.
Order and disorder, they each have their beauty.
