The Clockwork Century ; book 1
Sixteen years ago the city of Seattle was turned into a virtually uninhabitable wasteland. In an attempt to develop a mining machine Leviticus Blue created the Boneshaker, and drilled under the city, deep into the earth below, and released a gas. This Blight killed anyone who inhaled it, and then turned them into rotters, roaming the city looking for flesh.
So the people who escaped the Blight built a wall around Seattle to keep the gas in, but for some reason people always want to go where they shouldn't. And now Briar Wilkes is heading back into the city looking for her son.
Around a year ago I read and loved Priest's Maplecroft and in the comments Renay recommended I try Boneshaker, it got added to Mount TBR, and here I am, almost exactly 12 months later, finally getting around to reading it.
And I liked it. I liked it a lot, but I didn't love it quite so much as Maplecroft. Part of the reason may be that I was really busy when I started reading it, and was forced into reading little ittly bits, so never got a proper chance to sink my teeth into the story and really get immersed in it all.
Because, as I say, I really liked a lot about it.
I though Briar Wilkes was a great character. I totally got her motivation and character; she'd made mistakes but was doing the best she could to survive, and to raise her boy right. And so her decision to return to the city was perfect. But Zeke, him I was a little less fond of. Maybe a bit harsh of me considering he is only a boy, and he is what Briar raised him to be, for better and for worse. I didn't dislike him, I just didn't like him.
I did really like the world of the Blight and the rotters, and the whole steampunk-edness of it all. And I think that it a story that could really be built upon, so I think I will, at the very least, give the second book in the series a try.

I definitely do not like steampunk. Interesting characters, though. ( )

Didn't enjoy it and I'm just done with steam punk. Not for me. I tried with The Anubis Gates but I couldn't finish that one either. ( )

A really enjoyable steampunk adventure story set in an alternative history It's intelligently written and has plenty of action and plenty of strong women. A rites of passage/coming of age book which focusses on the mother/son relationship (at least that's how I read it). It took me ages to decide on a rating for this book because my opinion is midway between "I liked it" and "I really liked it". I'd certainly be up for reading more from this author. ( )

"Sure he's dead, and it's a good thing for us. It's hard to argue with a dead man. A dead man can't change his mind or make new rules, or behave like a bastard so no one will listen to him anymore. A dead man stays a saint." ( )

Priest’s latest, very simply rocks: It’s not only the steampunk adventure you’ve been waiting for, it’s the steampunk adventure you can give to friends of yours who wonder what the hell’s up with all those Victorian overcoats and goggles.

It's full of buckle and has swash to spare, and the characters are likable and the prose is fun. This is a hoot from start to finish, pure mad adventure.

In this age of invention the science of arms has made great progress. In fact, the most remarkable inventions have been made since the prolonged wars of Europe in the early part of the century, and the short Italian campaign of France in 1859 served to illustrate how great a power the engines of destruction can exert.

-- Thomas P. Kettell, History of the Great Rebellion. From its commencement its close, giving an account of its origin, The Secession of the Southern States, and the Formation of the Confederate Government, the concentration of the Military and Financial resources of the federal government, the development of its vast power, the raising, organizing, and equipping of the contending armies and navies; lucid, vivid, and accurate descriptions of battles and bombardments, sieges and surrender of forts, captured batteries, etc., etc.; the immense financial resources and comprehensive measures of the government, the enthusiasm and patriotic contributions of the people, together with sketches of the lives of all the eminent statesmen and military and naval commanders, with a full and complete index.
