A fascinating read on the psychology of religion and cultural adaptation. This book shows Amish as they are, not idealized, strengths and weaknesses. Importantly, the Amish are not homogeneous but rather span a wide range in what kinds of technology and interactions with the world are acceptable. Insightful even for those who are not interested in the Amish but who *are* interested in how cultures might merge competing value systems while still managing to hold a sense of identity. While academic in approach, not a light read, it isn't jargon-heavy and would be accessible to an interested lay person. ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse
Throughout their history, the Amish communities of North America have tried to remain separate from the currents of progress that swirl in the larger society. The authors and others argue that although the nation’s nearly 140,000 Amish continue to resist the influence of worldly institutions, the communities have nonetheless acquiesced to modernity in significant ways. Such change has not been easy and The Amish Struggle with Modernity examines on a national scale dilemmas that arise when a people devoted to plain living face the complexities of modern life.
