I enjoyed this imaginative retelling of Cinderella where there's magic with the fairies who live in the forest and with whom Aisling's life is deeply entangled. ( )

Not great. Not bad.

I didn't connect with the characters in any meaningful way, which is pretty damning criticism... but then this book wasn't written for me, so.

Liked: The huntresses. Some of the descriptive imagery. The conflicted hints at friendly step-sisterhood between Ash and Clara.

Disliked: The way most of the characters seemed undeveloped. Creeper fairy prince. How Ash kept trying repeatedly to throw herself under a bus. The lack of meaningful conflict, and the way it felt like Ash acted with so very little agency. ( )

Teen fiction; fantasy/fairytale/LGBT. Cinderella retold, but this time fairies are mysterious (and quite possibly dangerous) and servantgirl "Ash" gets caught in a bisexual love triangle. ( )

I found ASH to be a wonderful read. I've read other readers' reviews and most have rated this novel fairly low. At first, I wondered why, but then I came to the conclusion that the opinion on this book varies by the 'eye of the beholder'.

ASH was a delightful read for me, and I'd refer it to anyone who's willing to be open minded about lesbianism. Fantastic twist to the classic Cinderella, incorporating fairy lore and a teenage girl in the prime of her youth.

Lo's writing was so well done, that I found myself fantasizing about unleashing my opinion of her behavior to Ash's stepmother. (Thus why my pillow is severely beaten up)

Therefore, read this book if your not too picky with the books you read, and you might just like the secrets in the fairy world ;)

Favorite Quote; "It may not be your dream, StepSister, but do not scoff at those who dream it." ( )

Malinda Lo’s somber and lovely “Ash” is a lesbian retelling of “Cinderella”... It features a beautiful orphan — Ash, short for Aisling, and a perfect play on the name “Cinderella” — a cruel, social-climbing stepmother and two sneering stepsisters. Lo gives us a vaguely medieval setting, royal hunts, grand balls and an unquestioned class hierarchy. Not until the introduction of Kaisa, the king’s gorgeous young huntress, do we get a spin on tradition.
