Nonny Frett understands the meaning of "between a rock and a hard place." She's got two mothers, "one deaf-blind and the other four baby steps from flat crazy." She's got two men: her husband, easing out the back door; and her best friend, laying siege to her heart in her front yard. She has a job that holds her in the city, and she's addicted to a little girl stuck deep in the country. And she has two families: the Fretts, who stole her and raised her right; and the Crabtrees, who lost her and won't forget how they were done wrong. In Between, Georgia, population 90, a feud that began the night Nonny was born is escalating, and a random act of violence is about to ignite a stash of family secrets. This might be just what the town needs, if only Nonny wasn't sitting in the middle of it.--From publisher description.… (mere)

This was very different from the other Joshilyn Jackson novels I've read. This wasn't her usual suspense/ thriller, but a drama instead. I did enjoy it and found the cast of characters to be colorful and entertaining. I found her version of a small Southern town to be largely accurate, being from the South myself, born and raised, I don't often find this the case. Unfortunately, most writers just don't quite nail it.

That said, I did feel at times the story veered into the unbelievable. That one woman, from a almost nonexistent town, would have so many eccentric elements in her life is a bit hard to buy. I also felt that the story lacked substance or any real direction. While this was an enjoyable casual read, it definitely isn't Joshilyns best work, in my opinion. ( )

Not the best Joshilyn Jackson novel I've read but it was a good story. A little bit disjointed through the middle trying to keep all the characters and their relationships straightbut the plot was good. I enjoyed the strength of the family ties the main character had with her mother and aunts and niece.

*Update*: Just read this one again and I have to say I have completely changed my view of this story. I LOVED it!! Not quite sure what my mindset was when I read it the first time but it was absolutely a great story! Maybe it was because I did the audio version this time, but this one is a must read!! ( )

I've actually been through Between a few times - I know the book has nothing to do with the actual town though. I enjoyed reading about 2 very different families, each with challenges of their own. As a Southerner, I can honestly say I've known people very similar to each of the families, the Fretts and the Crabtrees. I appreciated there being a character like Stasia. She is an interesting and inspirational character, and it was nice to hear that the author knows someone very like her. I enjoyed the humor and the more serious parts and found it hard to quit listening to the book. ( )

Romeo and Juliet, McCoys and Hatfields were dueling families; now Frettes and Crabapples join the ranks. Mrs. Jackson has again written a tale filled with quirky Southern characters. Between, GA. is a small speck of a town near Athens and Atlanta. Bernese Frette owns half the town and her sworn enemy is Ona Crabtree, a mean drunk. The hatred between the two women stems from the fact that Bernese blind and deaf sister is the adopted Mother of the book's protagonist, Nooney and Ona is her biological Grandmother.

The story is a sad commentary about life in a small town but very truthful. ( )

I found this book on a rack at the hospital and read it to pass the time. Between is a town in Georgia which seems to be inhabited mostly by 2 families who are often at odds with each other, but who have undeniable ties to each other. I'm still not sure I've figured out the dynamics of either family. ( )
