Interesting information, but watered down at most times and overly preachy at others. I understand that old remedies are the basis for modern medicine and that sometimes today we do things medically that are just as baseless as the "ancient" or "old-wives tales" - but that doesn't necessarily mean we should stick to the old ways. The author's attempt at defining the science/medicine behind the tales was a nice start. What I'd like to have read was more than a start. Plenty of authors have successfully melded difficult to understand facts with entertainment. This was more of a light read, which unfortunately left me wanting more. ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse
Written with wit and narrative force, Honey, Mud, Maggots and Other Medical Marvels is an enriching excursion into the world of folk medicine. The award-winning team of Robert and MichelE Root-Bernstein provide a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of medical traditions. In addition to the honey, mud, and maggots used in wound therapy, the Root-Bernsteins unearth cures that range from ancient Egypt to the rain forests of contemporary Latin America. Whether it's the medicinal use of clay or the components of urine, all the cures in this book have one thing in common: they have stood the test of time because they work. With Nelson Runger's dynamic and sensitive narration, this studied collection of entertaining anecdotes about some weird-sounding-even stomach-churning-old remedies is in fact much more. It is a dazzling step into the closely-guarded secrets of medicine. No library descriptions found. |

Otherwise rather poorly written review of a selection of natural remedies. Also contains a somewhat deranged chapter about circumcision. Maybe, like with the (not)puns, you have to be American to get it. ( )
