I guess my biggest beef with this story was that I didn't like the main character. I'm sure that Jeannette adequately captured her grandmother's character, but it was the grandmother that I was apathetic to. I get from the story that she was hard to get close to, but because of that "quality", I couldn't get close to her either. Everything for her was black and white. I thought she was pretty shallow in that sense. No decision was hard for her to make because you just followed the "rules" in life. Her life was interesting, but the voice of the story made it boring. ( )

Easy reading, chapters only 2 pages usually. Very spirited, true old time survive on my own attitude. Lily believes in herself. Learns to break horses and uses that way to deal with people. Strong independent - surprised she gets married twice. Second husband, Big Jim lets her get her way yet seems stronger than portrayed in story. Learns to fly plane, teaches old discipline ways, likes living the hard desert, ranching lifestyle. Believes in raising kids freely as long as follows her thinking. Stood up for what she wanted even if meant losing teaching jobs repeatedly. ( )

Little House On the Prairie for grown-ups!

Jeannette's grandmother is back with a poweful tale to tell in this true-to-life novel. ( )

If I could I would give this 3 1/2 stars & the Glass Castle 4 1/2. This was another compelling read by Jeannette Walls but I didn't think this was as good as the Glass Castle. It seemed to end abruptly and the chapters were a little to short and choppy. But her grandmother's story was fascinating. ( )

The pert style of “Half Broke Horses” is much more repetitive and grating than the more spontaneous-sounding voice Ms. Walls used to describe her own life.

But the author comes from a family that knew how to lure horses using grain, not rope. And she has inherited a version of that skill. So she has managed to make her second book almost as inviting as her first, even though its upright heroine is never as startling as Ms. Walls’s parents were.
