I read this book in one sitting, and it will be some time before I completely gather my thoughts about it. It is very well-written, and in a style that should bring to mind the detective in the story. :) All of the idiosyncrasies in the book are purposeful, in my opinion, to evoke a certain response. And it works. What is not said in this short novel is absolutely as, or more, important than what is said outright. I keep thinking back to certain references, in the light of the ending, and enjoy what they now mean. I am trying to avoid spoilers here, but what I can say is that this novel is as simple or as complex as you decide it is. And I will never underestimate a parrot! ( )

An unimpressive, contrived piece of pseudo-literature from an author with a suspiciously good press. Michael Chabon takes the writing of Arthur Conan Doyle and his most famous character, Sherlock Holmes, to fit his own purposes, but God knows what they are or why we should care. The Final Solution's mystery is poorly paced and ultimately left unresolved; the only revelations concern things so juvenile (backwards writing in a mirror, for example) that they're almost insulting. Chabon's vain attempt to stand alongside Conan Doyle, one of the most natural storytellers in the English language, only makes his inferiority all the more apparent.

Even from a literary perspective, which is more Chabon's wheelhouse, the book is a dull void. There's no thematic message – the only engagement with the supposed Holocaust theme is in the title and in the final lines – and the characterisation in this supposed character study is superficial. The book is painfully verbose and indulgent; another reviewer has referred to it as a 'smugwank', which is, unfortunately, completely accurate. I've not yet read any of Chabon's more famous works (only the pastiche Gentlemen of the Road, which I rather liked), but his literary credibility in The Final Solution is weak. Some people just seem to think that ten-dollar words make for a rich novel, but in my opinion this bland novella is neither for fans of Sherlock Holmes nor for those looking for appealing literature. A beautifully written, literary homage to Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. The opening paragraph (see in Common Knowledge) sets the tone for the character of the "old man" and allows readers to move into the setting and story through Chabon's lyricism. I was also moved to read more about African Grey Parrots, their intelligence and plight in the wild. Some populations are doing well, but others are terribly endangered by the pet trade. Like the Jewish people during the Holocaust that were packed into trains and sent to concentration camps, so are parrots packed into crates and shipped long distances to pet stores. Many die along the way. ( )

I suppose he had to do it. And I suppose the old man at 89 could be so feeble and intermittent, but he need not be so. (Helene Tursten's Maud is much livelier at 88}. The inhabitants and visitors to the parish are interesting. ( )

I started this just before lunch and finished while having a cup of tea at Cacao's later in the afternoon. So, yes, it's short. And enjoyable. I'm just trying to give myself room to manouevre with the 3 stars. I gave The Yiddish Policeman's Union 5 stars, I have a couple of others of his on the shelf and they might just need something in between. The whole stars thing is like bears eating porridge, hard to get just right.

I don't know if anybody else would agree with me that this is a children's book. People don't seem to have tagged it such.

PS: My mother read this and said the trouble with it is that the author fancies himself clever. Exactly my thoughts. I've read several Chabons now and they all run that risk, but he gets away with it in the others. This one leaves you feeling a bit like saying 'smug wanker'. Of course, certain people who haven't read the book, would say, if they had, that it is the Sherlock Holmsian character who is, aptly, a smug wanker, not the author. I beg to differ. In advance, before anybody sets forth this argument. ( )

His gait was dreamy and he swung a daisy as he went. With each step the boy dragged his toes in the rail bed, as if measuring out his journey with careful ruled marks of his shoetops in the gravel. It was midsummer, and there was something about the black hair and pale face of the boy against the green unfurling flag of the downs beyond, the rolling white eye of the daisy, the knobby knees in their short pants, the self-important air of the handsome gray parrot with its savage red tail feather, that charmed the old man as he watched them go by. Charmed him, or aroused his sense – a faculty at one time renowned throughout Europe – of promising anomaly.
