An amazingly quick read, Nicholl’s seemingly breezy, beach-read novel includes a twist or two of downright grave circumstances. The well-written characters brought out passionate opinions: I related to Emma’s self-consciousness, but still found myself annoyed with her bad decisions at times, and I sympathized with Dexter’s confusion while simultaneously hating him for most of the book. The pictures into just one day of their lives each year show how they matured in age, yet their personalities remained constant, self-doubt crippling both of them until they finally get together. Even so, as a married couple, their life wasn’t perfect, and Dexter’s breakdown after its tragic ending proves he used her as a temporary band-aid much like his other relationships. His lifelong lack of true stability devastates not only the character himself, but also the reader, leaving us with a million and one what-if questions about how long it took them to get together. By the way, was I ever even supposed to believe that they weren’t inevitably going to get together? Nicholl’s certainly never convinced me that the pair was ever just friends, and I’ve yet to determine if that was intentional. Altogether, though, he did write a dramatically powerful book, perfect for the big screen, about timing, taking chances, and loving oneself. ( )

I was feeling a little precious and wanted to read something that was light and heart-warming. This book really was neither of those. Let me just say that Dexter Mayhew is really quite up there on the list of characters I have hated the most.

The thing I hate about this book (and yes I know the word hate is strong, but I really need to use it in this circumstance) is the mindset of Emma, that she's not good enough for Dexter, that she's fat, ugly, doesn't move in the right circles, not successful enough, basically all the things women are continuously told to think *urgh*

I hate that David Nicholls had one decent character in Emma Morley and he just killed her. It really should have been Dexter. I hate that this book made me cry, it does not deserve my tears and even though Emma Morley isn't real, I really wanted her to live and to live happily.

So much for a light and easy read *sigh* my heart hurts. ( )

OK, I heard good things about this book and my curiosity got the better of me and I said to myself, 'What the hell.' I'm glad I did though because it's a very compelling read and hard to put down.

I liked the format where we see a peek into one day of the two main character's lives over the course of 20 years. Nothing is sugar coated though. It's realistic enough to be believable and the characters are flawed enough where they seem real and relateable. While some of the flaws are pretty bad, you still feel sympathy for them because you know the kind of person they are and still like them anyway.

I haven't reached the end yet, but from what I've read in other reviews, it makes me reluctant to do so. But, I'm in it for the long haul so will be sticking around. ( )

As much as I wanted to hate their perfect looks and charmed relationship, in the end I'm the same sucker for nicely-pitched pathos I always am and fell for the characters. If strings had swelled near the end I would have cried. ( )

Må bra-läsning i högsta ligan

“Love and be loved,” [Emma] had told herself, “if you ever get the chance.” It’s something you may want to find out this summer at poolside. And if you do, you may want to take care where you lay this book down. You may not be the only one who wants in on the answers.

One of the most hilarious and emotionally riveting love stories you'll ever encounter.

'What are days for?
Days are where we live
They come, they wake us
Time and time over.
They are to be happy in:
Where can we live but days?

Ah, solving the question
Brings the priest and the doctor
In their long coats
Running over the fields.'

Live each day as if it’s your last’, that was the conventional advice, but really, who had the energy for that? What if it rained? It just wasn’t practical. Better by far to simply try and be good and courageous and bold and to make a difference. Not change the world exactly, but the bit around you. Go out there with your passion and your electric typewriter and work hard at… something. Change lives through art maybe. Cherish your friends, stay true to your principles, live passionately and fully and well. Experience new things. Love and be loved, if you ever get the chance.
