Beginning with the story of Stephen from the book of Acts, considered the first Christian martyr, the drama builds to the passion of the early Church's persecution under the Roman Empire. The hardy and radical faith of those first believers spawned medieval missionary movements that spread the gospel across Europe and into England, Scotland, and Ireland. As the story continues, it places a significant emphasis on the sufferings of the early Protestants during the Reformation. As a vicar in the Church of England, author John Foxe strongly identified with the Protestant sects throughout Europe, and his loyalty to their cause comes through in his descriptions of many early clashes between Catholic and Protestant believers. Listeners are given an opportunity to experience the storytelling that incited several wars between Catholic and Protestant forces. The political and personal passion of the Reformation continues with the stories of the French Protestants during and after the French Revolution.… (mere)

John Foxe painstakingly collected the stories of the martyrs up to his time, and his son carried on the effort. We have carried on his mission, collecting in this volume the stories of martyrs dating from ancient times all the way to today.

Beginning with Jesus Christ, this exceptional historical record traces the roots of religious persecution through the sixteenth century. It examines the heroic lives of great men and women such as John Hus, John Wycliffe, William Tyndale, Anne Askew, Lady Jane Grey, and Martin Luther. This edition has been streamlined and reorganized in today's language.

Heavy. I had to read slowly. But sobering, prompts one to consider pain and death and the ultimate reward.

I don't know if I would recommend it, per se. I wouldn't tell someone to set aside another book so that they could read this. But if you decide to read this one, I won't discourage it. ( )

It's the super short version, and the last third of it gets a little graphic, but it's moving, and it leaves me with a big, urgent question: what is it about the gospel that leads people to give up all their comforts and risk their lives, and even sometimes risk their families for the proclamation of Jesus Christ? Christ our Savior, in the Gospel of St. Matthew, hearing the confession of Simon Peter, who, first of all other, openly acknowledged Him to be the Son of God, and perceiving the secret hand of His Father therein, called him (alluding to his name) a rock, upon which rock He would build His Church so strong that the gates of hell should not prevail against it.
