Personal Response: This was a quirky, fun book that re-imagines the phrase “when pigs fly”. I love the whimsical illustrations, rich colors, and humor Wiesner infuses into the simple plot.
Evaluation: Wisener’s nearly wordless book is ideal for a very young audience, who will enjoy the simple and imaginative plot. The only text refers to the day and time, which is appropriate for an age group that still doesn’t have a full grasp on concepts of time. The watercolor illustrations are lush, bold images, evoking the time of day as it progresses through the book. Each element in the illustrations shows the action of the story and reflects a feeling of movement and energy. The changing perspective of the frogs, setting the time on a white backdrop, and using panels to show slight changes in action work together to convey a sense of adventure and excitement. (
