E a morte, nesse caso, é apenas o começo.

First off I completely understand why the FANBOYS hated this book when it came out in 2009. By that time the zombie trope was very thinned out. However, Simon Pegg has said that the zombie genre is a setting not a plot line.
There is nothing special in Death Troopers. It is Star Wars zombies. If you want to read that then pick it up. Schreiber has an ability in this book for amazing descriptions of horror. I listened to the audiobook version and the addition of foley slaps and moist movement sounds made all the difference.
This is not high art but in October of 2020 this was precisely what I needed that I didn't know I needed. Like all good Star Wars novels this will now send me into the author's back catalogue.

Four stars because you could do a lot worse. IE The Walking Dead. ( )

A curious idea: zombies and Star Wars. The SW franchise pretty much has the skill to grab whatever genre may be popular at the time and make a Star Wars tale out of it. That's what all those Republic Commando stories were, for instance; they were off the fact that a while back all those squad-based combat video games were popular. The zombie idea is not a bad one, but it is not great either. It's basically nice entertainment for a while. The novel uses the bioweapon/virus angle (think things like Resident Evil or even the recent Walking Dead) for the zombies, but there is a bit of a twist to that, which I won't reveal. Also for a draw a couple of well known characters make an appearance, which I thought was neat. The book does start a bit slow, but once it gets going, you keep on going pretty much until the end. And there are hints leading to the prequel (is this the best term) Red Harvest. Like many of the novels in the SW Expanded Universe, the strength of this one is that you get to see other characters and other situations besides the "usual" cast, like say some lesser known part of the Imperial service (in this case their corrections units and a prison barge).

Overall, if you are looking for some quick entertainment, and you are a Star Wars fan, odds are pretty good you will like this one. If you like zombies, but you are a bit skeptical about how they fit in Star Wars, I would say give it a chance. However, the book is more of a borrow from the library rather than buy, but as I said, it makes for some quick entertainment. I did label it horror, mostly for the zombies, but the gore levels are fairly tame compared to other zombie works. ( )

Star Wars och zombies? Vad mer behöver man? Den var obehaglig och spännande. ( )

The Imperial prison barge Purge breaks down and its only hope is to scavenge a nearby ghost ship Star Destroyer. However, the boarding crew brings back something truly terrible. I won't go into too many spoilers, but this book was a quick and gruesome Star Wars zombie story. It's very fast paced and has a couple of familiar faces. However, the book has faults. I had a hard time imagining the characters as they weren't fleshed out and the pacing was a little too frantic. Details were seriously lacking. (The Star Destroyer was never even given a name!) I enjoyed the concept but the execution could have been better. Horror is one of my favorite genres and I had high expectations for my first Stars Wars horror book. Sadly, they were mostly unfulfilled. If this is was not a Star Wars book, it probably would have been just two stars but I'll give it three for concept and speed. ( )
