The story focuses on Uncle Avtar, who emigrates by himself to California and finally settles in Oak Grove, starting a farm. And his niece, Jeeto, who wants to forsake the Indian community and arranged marriages and just go to college. Interesting times with Avtar becoming a migrant worker, lumped in with the Mexicans because of his brown skin, and not knowing the language. Finally he is "rescued" by Mohta Singh. But then events force them apart - and even the Indian women don't know the story. Nice how the stories interweave with each other. ( ) ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse
In Oak Grove, California, 1976, there are as many Sikh temples as Christian churches, the city council prints announcements in both English and Punjabi and the large Indian immigrant community is gracefully coexists with the old farming families. But for 15-year-old Jeeto, figuring out where she fits best--and what she must do to find that fit--isn't so easy. No library descriptions found. |
