The Novel that Inspired the Now-Classic Film The Caine Mutiny and the Hit Broadway Play The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial Herman Wouk's boldly dramatic, brilliantly entertaining novel of life-and mutiny-on a Navy warship in the Pacific theater was immediately embraced, upon its original publication in 1951, as one of the first serious works of American fiction to grapple with the moral complexities and the human consequences of World War II. In the intervening half century, The Caine Mutiny has become a perennial favorite of readers young and old, has sold millions of copies throughout the world, and has achieved the status of a modern classic.… (mere)

Another book that I first encountered as a movie. Because of that, I was surprised by the first section of the novel about Willie Keith before he joined The Caine. And the book continues on long past the movie too!

Keith's relationship with May Wynn has a lot more depth in the book, though I came close to despising Willie for his superior attitude towards her. In fact, all the characters had more nuances to them except for Steve Maryk. ( )

Beginning as a strongly autobiographical novel, this work was eventually modified as a play, and several films and TV specials. the story line follows the career of a diffident student, who becomes a competent naval officer. His formative trauma is a mutiny, when the ship's officers take command of the ship from its then commander, who has exhibited strongly erratic behaviour. The readers are left in dubt as to whether the action was necessary. But our hero uses the experience to grow his own competwence and self identity. It is an interesting read and is more sophisticated than a great deal of the war fiction popular in its day. ( )

Oh man, loved it. The character interactions were amazing! Everything was well done and worked out exactly as could be hoped...except for the Willie Keith and May drama, wish that would have come to a more finalized conclusion, but I guess we are supposed to draw our own (which, of you've read any of my past reviews, I don't like doing.) anyway, couldn't have asked for more, big fan, read it of you have a chance. [title: The Caine Mutiny] is a near-perfect novel. It's a great combination of a character study and an adventure story. And, because the characters (especially Captain Queeg) are so much fun to read about, even the parts that would otherwise be boring keep you hooked.

I've read plenty of Pulitzer prize-winning novels that were less than great, but this one lives up to the hype.

One caution: don't watch the movie, or even read about the cast, before you read the novel. Some of the casting decisions are baffling, and you don't want those Hollywood actors getting in the way of your imagination. ( )

I enjoyed the movie (which I saw before reading the book). Excellent reading. ( )

He was of medium height, somewhat chubby, and good looking, with curly red hair and an innocent, gay face, more remarkable for a humorous air about the eyes and large mouth than for any strength of chin or nobility of nose.

The world became narrowed to a wobbling iron shell on a waste of foamy gray, and the business of the world was staring out at empty water or making red-ink insertions in the devil's own endless library of mildewed unintelligible volumes.
