Fireside Books' Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty collects material originally published in Tales of Suspense nos. 59, 63, and 79-81; Avengers no. 4; and Captain America nos. 110 and 122. It features stories that Stan Lee wrote with art from Jack Kirby, Gene Colan, Jim Steranko, Joe Sinnott, Frank Ray, and Frank Giacoia. The book also features Stan Lee's prose story "Captain America Foils the Traitor's Revenge" from Captain America no. 3 (1941). The stories retell Cap's origin, his joining the Avengers, and his battles with the Red Skull and the Scorpion. Lee introduces the volume and promotes Cap as he did other Marvel projects in this time, even hinting in his Epilogue at a new Captain America television series and film, likely a reference to the 1979 film starring Reb Brown and its sequel, Captain America II: Death Too Soon. Oddly, in Lee's introduction, he says that Marvel "didn't merely reprint the strip exactly as it appeared in the thirties" because they "simply didn't have that original artwork available to us" (pg. 7). This is unlikely as Marvel has since reprinted the original 1941 origin and probably stemmed from disagreements between Marvel and Cap co-creator Joe Simon. Also since then, many of these stories have appeared in more complete collected editions. Still, this is a nice volume and worth picking up for the fan of Captain America.
