The rules of marriage . . . according to Miss Annabel Essex A husband must be: Rich. Make that very rich. She's had enough of leaky roofs and thread-worn clothing. English. London is the center of the civilized world, and Annabel has a passion for silk and hot water. Amiable. Good-looking would be nice, but not necessary. Same for intelligent. Isn't she lucky? She's found just the man! And her chosen spouse is nothing like the impoverished Scottish Earl of Ardmore, who has nothing but his gorgeous eyes, his brain-and his kisses-to recommend him. So what cruel twist of fate put her in a carriage on her way to Scotland with just that impoverished earl and all the world thinking they're man and wife? Sleeping in the same bed? Not to mention the game of words started by the earl-in which the prize is a kiss. And the forfeit . . . Well. They are almost married, after all!.… (mere)

Personally, I found James's novels to be whimsical, enjoyable, light-hearted fun. This one, though, stands above the rest. It's not as episodic as Much Ado About You. It has a definite climax and resolution which its predecessor lacks. It's also not as melodramatic as its successor, The Taming of the Duke. It's mature but still over-the-top as all romances are (which is what makes them so fun), and it's sweet while still being grounded. It's a great novel by James.

Annabel has been impoverished, so she wants a rich husband. In the previous novel, she came off as a bit shallow for this, but Kiss Me, Annabel really explores her character in all of its shades and depths. For his part, the Earl of Ardmore starts out as idealistic about marriage, but his journey helps him to fall truly and deeply in love. It's just so romantic. Highly recommend this novel. ( )

Amusing and sweetly satisfying, even if the Shakespearean tie is tenuous at best. I continue to be delighted at the Essex sisters and their adventures. ( )

This one was just so-so, and the hijinks at the end were kind of awful. Tampering with someone's horse is like tampering with their car today. You don't cut the brakeline just to get a reaction from someone! And the person who did it knew the danger, both to the horse and the rider, and did it anyway. Same with the arranged abduction, people could truly die in a scenario like that! Anyone over the age of 8 should know better. ( )

This book begins so well and has a wonderful, thoroughly enjoyable middle. And an ending that almost made me toss the book aside. If I hadn't enjoyed the first two-thirds of the book so much, I'm not sure I would have made it through. The ending was everything I hate in a romance novel--a contrived conflict that makes no earthly sense; a heroine determined to believe herself unloved despite all evidence to the contrary, who won't just SAY what she's thinking; and meddling family members determined to orchestrate a ridiculous spectacle. God. I am so damn unhappy about the ending. It went from a 5-star book to 3-stars because of the ending alone.
