People are eagerly waiting for the dragons to hatch from their cocoons, but the hatching day turns out to be an anti-climax as the dragons are all deformed. As years pass, the dragons become more burdensome to the townsfolk as the dragons cannot fend for themselves. The dragons themselves are also unhappy with their situation and induce the townsfolk to send them off to Kelsingra, a city from their dreams. I really enjoyed reading the book, but the ending was very sudden. I turned the page expecting it to continue and found that it was the end of the book. Wow, was this good! Much of the depressing hopelessness that I found in Ms Hobb's previous books was totally missing. My only complaint is that some of the storyline seems unfinished and two characters were not as likable as I may have wanted, I would love more tales of anyone of the characters in these books.
Hobb's meticulously realized fantasy tale is a welcome addition to contemporary dragon lore. A nicely imagined fantasy setting that will engage readers and raise anticipation for the second installment. Indeholdt iIndeholderIs expanded inHæderspriserDistinctions
Guided by the great blue dragon Tintaglia, a tangle of serpents fights its way up the Rain Wild River to the cocooning grounds. But the creatures which emerge from the cocoons are a travesty of the powerful, shining dragons of old; some cannot fly, others are stunted or deformed. To save the dragons, a band of dragon keepers, hunters and chroniclers must attend them if they are to find their true home--the legendary Elderling city of Kelsingra. Be sure to have book two in hand, as this one ends in a bit of a cliff-hanger. ( )
