In my opinion, “Welcome to China” is an enlightening informational book. This book is very engaging, organized, and accurate. It tells readers all about Chinese culture. The book has many textual features that help readers to stay engaged. For example, the book displays real pictures of China and its people, fun facts, and words in Chinese script (translated into English). Although the pages of this book have many textual features, the book is set up in an organized manner so that it does not overwhelm readers with information. This book is entertaining to read because of its writing, organization, and pictures. The writing is very descriptive in terms of discussing what life is like in China. For example, “Traditionally, Chinese children lived in the same home as their parents, grandparents, and sometimes their great-grandparents. Today, people move more often, and most homes are small, especially in the crowded cities. Family and friends often gather for mealtimes. A Chinese meal is made up of many different dishes, which are shared by everyone.” The writing is organized around pictures to provide fun facts and small paragraphs of information. The photographs of China and its people motivate children to learn more about Chinese culture. The big idea is to teach children all about the culture of Chinese people. ( )

Summary:
An informational book about China. The book describes China's history and the lifestyle of people living in China. It also describes traditions celebrated in China and the different cities in China.

Comments:
Great book that could be used in a research project about China. It is also a good book to read to students who are interested in learning about another country. This book could be used in a multicultural lesson. ( )
