First came the virus. And then the dreams...A man escapes from a biological testing facility, unknowingly carrying a deadly weapon: a mutated strain of super-flu that will wipe out over 99 percent of the world's population within a few weeks. Those who remain are scared, bewildered, and in need of a leader. Two emerge - Mother Abagail, the benevolent 108-year-old woman who urges them to build a peaceful community in Boulder, Colorado; and Randall Flagg, the 'dark man', the apostate of death, the warlord of the charnel house and Prince of Evil. Now the survivors must choose between them - and ultimately decide the fate of all humanity.… (mere)

Armageddon's Children af Terry Brooks (lquilter)
lquilter: Terry Brooks' Armageddon's Children is basically a YA post-apocalyptic gathering of the forces, much like Stephen King's adult-fiction version, The Stand. Brooks' AC is more high-fantasy good-versus-evil, and King's is more Christian eschatology, but both involve dark forces working towards a final show-down, in a post-apocalyptic world.… (mere)

Station Eleven af Emily St. John Mandel (BookshelfMonstrosity)
BookshelfMonstrosity: An ensemble cast of flu survivors journey across the U.S. and through the remains of civilization to fulfill their fated roles in these novels. The Stand is more graphic and action-packed, with a clear theme of good vs. evil.

One of the better Stephen King books I've read. I really enjoy the large casts in books like this and there was a good array of likable and unlikable characters, plus there was some decent character development. I'm definitely glad I didn't read this at the start of the pandemic - some earlier chapters would have hit far too close to home. ( )

Even better with this reread in 2022 (first read was in 1984). ( )

This was so good! I would have rated it higher if it were just a tiny bit shorter. I love Frannie and Stu, I would love to read a book just about them! ( )

I still don't understand WHY but this is one of my all-time favorite books. Maybe it makes me face fears I'd rather leave uncovered, but I survived them, through this book. ( )

Originally published in 1978. Read so many years ago when Stephen King was the most popular author in my age group. But for me? Most boring novel I have ever read! Way over-rated! I literally thought I was going to have to slit my wrist just to get out of it. ( )

Outside the street's on fire In a real death waltz Between what's flesh and what's fantasy And the poets down here Don't write nothing at all They just stand back and let it all be And in the quick of the night They reach for their moment And try to make an honest stand... -- Bruce Springsteen
...And it was clear she couldn't go on, The door was opened and the wind appeared, The candles blew and then disappeared, The curtains flew and then he appeared, Said, "Don't be afraid, Come on, Mary," And she had no fear And she ran to him And they started to fly... She had taken his hand... Come on, Mary, Don't fear the reaper... -- Blue Oyster Cult
Well the deputy walks on hard nails And the preacher rides a mount But nothing really matters much, It's doom alone that counts And the one-eyed undertaker, he blows a futile horn "Come in," she said, "I'll give ya Shelter from the storm." -- Bob Dylan
