A strange novel, probably best described as Mary Shelley's 'Frankenstein' written in the style of William Gibson by a Harlequin romance author. Intelligent but lonely programmer 'Vic' (Victoria) designs an artificially intelligent computer program called Jodie to be her best friend, only 'Jodie' decides 'she' is actually a 'he'. When Vic's boss, a morally corrupt and power hungry pantomime villain, gets wind of Vic's creation - which she is running off his supercomputer and electricity bill - the only alternative is to download 'Jodie' into a human brain. I kid you not. Luckily, handsome yet caring freedom fighter John Reston has just been declared braindead.

Randomly selected from a keyword search for 'artificial intelligence' and 'fiction' on Amazon, 'Body Electric' is not the type of book I would usually read - the cover should have been a warning, never mind the content! Vic - and I hate characters with androgynous names - is a walking therapy textbook, blaming her messed up personal life on her relationship with her father. Jodie is ' I Dream of Jeannie' in a lumberjack shirt and jeans. Transplanting a computer program into a human brain is easy, apparently, and the only side effects are the occasional epileptic seizure after mad hot passionate 'let me show you how' sex with your creator. (And by the way, Miss Squires, it is not recommended to put anything in the mouth of someone having a fit, they will not swallow their tongue.) The writing and dialogue are also incredibly painful, but then, I suppose books like this are not written to be studied in class, are they? I did like reading about California, background description that the author could hardly mess up as she lives there, and the initial premise of creating an artificial intelligence that quickly grows more powerful than its programmer was interesting - but still: 'What do you mean, fully functional? Maybe you mean does it have full body functions?' I've read fan fiction stories on the Internet more convincing than this. Entertaining, for all the wrong reasons. ( )
