This second volume (following VOICES OF WAR) culled from more than 35,000 stories in the ongoing Library of Congress Veterans History Project is a dense collection of reminiscences - oral histories, letters and diaries - from WWI to the Persian Gulf War, with emphasis on WWII. The most compelling stories are eyewitness accounts- a sailor recounts the attack on Pearl Harbor, a survivor of the Indianapolis sinking in 1945 describes five days in shark-infested Pacific waters, a doctor relates the horrors of trench warfare in 1917, a soldier endures murderous combat during the 1968 Tet offense in Vietnam. Contributors survive long, terrible experiences as prisoners in Germany, Japan, North Korea and Vietnam - and a short, unpleasant confinement in Iraq. Military buffs will happily add this to their shelves.… (mere)

This was not a "readers book." The typeface was difficult to read and the paperback binding did not standup well to useage. The stories were well suited to scholarly research on the subject, but were not in the "voice" of the people recounting the events; almost no one talks the way the stories were written. Dispire my love of books, and my patriotic love of country and service members, I fond this to be a very difficult read. ( )

Tom Wiener takes his readers on a journey of discovery that lets you see war as it was seen by those who lived it. He doesn't set out to prove some point of view or perspective, but, rather lets peoples lives tell the story as it was. A very good book. ( )

Forever a Soldier is a book filled with many stories from soldiers from different wars. This book is at times hard to read, but makes you so proud of the men and women who are willing to put their lives on the line for us. I recommend this book for all!
