Is Peter Tinsley imagining things? Or did that frail, beautiful doll, Tracy Flynn, flip the gangster Dime Gallardo to the ceiling just as Dime was about to make macaroni out of Pete's skull? Pete can't get an explanation out of Tracy, and he's got his hands full trying to grope his way into a cozier position with her. All of which make it tough to concentrate on the Martian extravaganza he's supposed to be writing for Star Spangled Studios... But things get tougher still when Pete gets zonked for real by a prop stunray -- and he and Tracy get kidnapped by an alien who's supposed to be an actor (or an actor who's supposed to be an alien?) Suddenly Pete's the hero of a real life Star-Spangled story, fighting to save Tracy, the world, and his own hide from cosmic danger… (mere)

Just as I've basically lumped the 1st 28 Goulart bks that I've read together & referred all reviews to my one review of "Wildsmith", I read my 29th Goulart & it doesn't have a single bit of humorously dysfunctional technology in it - thusly making it significantly different from what I remember of the others I've read. Anyway, this one's basically a parody of hack SF serial writing in the 1940s & did have the Goulart trademark goofiness that I like & was pulp-readable in a successfully fluid way, etc, etc.. There's also a subplot of the 2 Hollywood script writers constantly referencing wch Hollywood figures are gay - wch seems more of a parody of the 1940s bourgeois than homophobic but it wd probably wear pretty thin to most people I know pretty quickly. Fortunately, that falls to the wayside eventually. ( )

It's pretty quintessential Ron Goulart. Tongue in cheek humor; quirky version of period's pulp fiction. Not always a good translation to contemporary readers discovering for first time; but, for its time humorous and yet had characters you invested in within the opening pages. ( )
