The eponymous Little Witch, who debuted in 1972 in author/illustrator Linda Glovach's The Little Witch's Black Magic Cookbook, and who then also starred in her 1973 The Little Witch's Black Magic Book of Disguises and her 1974 The Little Witch's Black Magic Book of Games, returns in this fourth title devoted to her creative adventures, this time focusing on Christmas activities and crafts. After the section devoted to "The Little Witch's Code," setting out the responsible way our little magic maker approaches holiday activities, the book presents how to make Christmas cards, wrap presents, and create various Christmas decorations. There is a section devoted to Christmas Parties, with instructions for holding a Taffy Pull, going on a Caroling Party, conducting a Piñata Party, and putting together a Bean King and Queen Party. The Christmas at Home section includes instructions for making a gingerbread house and a wreath, decorating the house and the tree, and creating a Friendship Christmas Tree, and it concludes with a discussion of the Twelfth Night bonfire celebration. The book closes with a brief index...

Like its three predecessors (as well as the two subsequent books in the series that I have read), I found The Little Witch's Christmas Book quite appealing. I do not teach, nor do I currently work with children, so many of the ideas presented here are not of immediate use to me. That said, I appreciated the fact that all of the activities and crafts included could be undertaken with basic home and art store supplies, and I also greatly liked the inclusion of "The Little Witch's Code," which clearly communicates expected behavior, both from a safety and good manners perspective. This section has been included at the front of all six of The Little Witch books I have read thus far, with the exception of The Witch's Thanksgiving Book, and is a very positive feature of these books, encouraging good behavior, in addition to the fun activities being promoted. The artwork was very cute here, and is what gave the book its witchy appeal—an important factor, as this is the entire reason for my seeking out the books in this sixteen-volume series in the first place! I particularly enjoyed the wordless, two-page spread toward the end of the book, dominated by a cross-section picture revealing all of the rooms inside the Little Witch's house. Recommended to young people looking for creative ideas for Christmas activities and parties. ( )
