Wild, wild book, (he says in his best Carson imitation), not the most likeable character, but the way Hannah uses language is linguistic acrobatics. Fun, fun, fun! ( ) Ray is a doctor, former Navy F-4 pilot, and a tortured soul. He has “a hundred-and-fifty IQ and perfect pitch on instruments,” but is a mess. Or maybe it’s part of the reason he’s a mess – being too aware and in tune with the world. He’s a drinker, philanderer, a smasher of rules. Ray’s beloved wife, Westy, comes to believe he puts himself “deliberately in peril and in trash.” His point of view switches between the Civil and Vietnam wars and present time. There’s poetry, truth and music in Hannah’s prose. Humor and tragedy are always intermingled in his work. And as always, his writing is a little magical. I finished this book feeling sort of dizzy and off-kilter, then I read that it was "edited" by Gordon Lish and the whole thing popped into focus. The voice is both completely original and yet somehow also bears that distinctive Lish imprint. One hell of an editor... But while the language sizzles and the characters and settings feel fresh and true, I'm not sure if there's much else going on here. But maybe it will sneak up on me -- I'm not ruling out that possibility. First, you should probably make time to read this in one sitting, but read it slow. I read it too fast and got lost at a few points, but the problem is that the book, in a way, has a style which asks you to fly. It will draw you in, but at the same time, you'll likely end it being a bit confused and need to go back, go back, and perhaps reread. It's entertainment, and certainly something to get lost in, but it left me wanting a great more, or else a bit less. My review of this work can be found here. ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse

"A shorthand epic of extraordinary power . . . A novel of brilliant particulars and dizzying juxtapositions" from the acclaimed southern author of Geronimo Rex (Newsweek). Nominated for the American Book Award, Ray is the bizarre, hilarious, and consistently adventurous story of a life on the edge. Dr. Ray--a womanizer, small-town drunk, vigilante, poet, adoring husband--is a man trying to make sense of life in the twentieth century. In flight from the death he dealt flying over Vietnam, Dr. Ray struggles with those bound to him by need, sickness, lunacy, by blood and by love. "This novel hangs in the memory like a fishhook. It will haunt you long after you have finally put it down. Barry Hannah is a talent to reckon with, and I can only hope that Ray finds an audience it deserves." --Harry Crews, The Washington Post Book World No library descriptions found. |
