More valuable than fun or entertaining. Actually, dry and boring, but good advise that needs to be read/heard. ( )

This book was first published 47 years ago and has been subsequently updated in 12 editions to reflect the latest additions to the stock market, including cryptocoins. I was looking for a book that explains the fundamentals of the stock market and this one was recommended in more than a few places online.

I'm happy to say the recommendations were on point. This has both the history, the good, the bad, the sane and insane parts of the entire field and explains just enough to help me better understand how it works (or doesn't work -> see 2008). The final part of the book contains investment advice tailored for different needs readers might have. If you're ever thinking of investing in stock I highly recommend giving this book a read first. This was my first book into the world of investing strategies and ways to double my money in 21 days (it's a joke). Malkiel has covered a lot of ground in this book covering technical and financial analysis of the markets, and slowly building up to the idea of markets being efficient.

I like the examples and explanations provided by the author for critical ideas in the book. The writing is also humorous and non-dry which I always appreciate for a non-fiction. ( )

A pretty good read for what it's worth. A good primer into basic finance. Personally, it was a good review of finance 101, with a pretty solid explanation of modern portfolio theory, and CAPM. Book seems timely, updated to include a large section on speculative bubbles, and even includes a chapter on behavioral economics. Includes a brief section on the 2008 financial crisis (kind of the standard narrative). It discusses the two competing views of stock prices, which is basically the fundamentalist discount model and technicalist beauty contest.

Surprisingly, the review of the literature was quite broad, going from historical economists debating over tulip mania to Fama's work on beta (that beta against the S&P 500 is predictive of returns). Personally, I thought the most interesting thing was the discussion of Fama-French factors (beta, small firms, value) and the idea of seeing P/E ratios as a certain premium.

The book is famous for introducing efficient market theory (strong, semi-strong and weak forms) to the general public. It argues through some pretty copious evidence that it is hard to beat the market consistently either through fundamentals or technicals. Malkiel shows how the market has outperformed in the long run even professionals, and so advises buying and holding a broadly diversified index as the main component of a portfolio. The book argues that the fees taken by active managers, along with transaction costs and taxes wipe out any extra return if there is any.

Filled with practical advice (life cycle investing, holding more bonds to stocks as you get older), and the standard lessons of finance. A quick and easy read, recommended for beginners or to refresh one's memory. ( )

As someone with very little investing knowledge, this was pretty educational for me, at least in that it introduced a number of concepts and gave me an idea of what questions to start asking.

This is an investment classic: it offers an elementary exposition of financial theory, a potted history of stock market investment fads, and (at the risk of annoying my fund manager friends and fellow strategists) a profitable investment strategy to boot. It is also a good read.
