One by one, five little ducks wander away from their mother, leaving Mother Duck very sad. It is her sad quacking that brings all the wandering ducklings wandering back to her.

This children’s book is an appealingly illustrated retelling of the song “Five Little Ducks” and the tune is included in the book. Young children will be delighted to see one of their favorite little songs come to life in the pages of this book.

Highly recommended. ( )

21 Months - We've been singing and signing this story for over a year so it's a favorite. I like the addition of the images of the ducklings and their distractions and then when they return they come with gifts for Momma. Cute, and something new for us to talk about. Fun book and cute illustrations. ( )

Summary:
Five Little Ducks is a story about a mother duck that lost her five ducklings. The mother duck went on a walk over the hills with her five ducks and one by one the ducks disappeared. During the walk, the mother duck began to call the ducks by saying, “Quack, quack, quack,” but only four ducks came back. As the story continued the mother duck would discover that she would continue to not have all of other ducklings. Near the end of the story, a sad mother duck didn’t have any ducklings to count. One day she went out and cried, “Quack, quack, quack,” all five ducks came back.

Personal Reaction:
I really liked this traditional literature book because I used to sing the song to my youngest son. At the time I was singing the song, I didn’t realize it was actually a book until a few years ago. This book is an outstanding example of how stories can be passed down through generations and be just as awesome as you first heard the song or book read.

Classroom Extension Ideas:
1.) This book can be used to introduce dramatic play and finger play to students. As many as ten ducks can be added to the story. The class counts down to zero using fingers to reiterate the numbers.
2.) The teacher can fill a small swimming pool with water for outdoor play. The class can place rubber ducks in the water and pretend the ducklings are following the mother duck. One by one the teacher can remove one duck at a time as the students sing the song.
3.) The teacher can take the class on a pretend nature walk and one by one have each student sit down in the middle of a circle as the class counts down the remaining ducks. ( )

Very short, simple, sweet, counting book. Mama duck starts out with five ducks and then through the course of the walk the little ducklings all walk away. They come back in the end with presents for Mama duck. Lots of quacks and counting. ( )
