From the Publisher: Beatrice Lacey, as strong-minded as she is beautiful, refuses to conform to the social customs of her time. Destined to lose her family name and beloved Wideacre estate once she is wed, Beatrice will use any means necessary to protect her ancestral heritage. Seduction, betrayal, even murder-Beatrice's passion is without apology or conscience. "She is a Lacey of Wideacre," her father warns, "and whatever she does, however she behaves, will always be fitting." Yet even as Beatrice's scheming seems about to yield her dream, she is haunted by the one living person who knows the extent of her plans-and her capacity for evil. Sumptuously set in Georgian England, Wideacre is intensely gripping, rich in texture, and full of color and authenticity. It is a saga as irresistible in its singular magic as its heroine.… (mere)

No stars. Returned book to Audible - absolute nonsense. The main character veering into incest with her brother was the final straw. “Flowers i the Attic” meets the 18th century.

Not a typical Philippa Gregory novel, in my opinion, but I've only read the Plantagenet series.
It's graphic, violent, and too disturbing for my taste. I'm a big Philippa Gregory fan, but I didn't like this novel and I won't read the others in the trilogy. ( )

I first read this as a young bookseller when it was published in 1987. I’m curious to see if I still find it disturbing. 7/9/22

Still disturbing. 7/10/22

It seemed to go on a few hundred extra pages to wrap it up so quickly in the end. I knew where this was going, and yet I read on. 7/13/22 ( )

It's hard to finish the books when you hate the characters so much. I suppose that means it's a well written book about obsession, but I just found it nasty. ( )

Spoilers.

The quality of writing is great - several notches above her Tudor and Cousins' serieses.

But... surprise! On page 54 we find out Beatrice's brother is a gay sexual masochist who enjoys being beaten. ( )
