A Clean Kill in Tokyo af Barry Eisler (crazybatcow)
crazybatcow: If you like how Reacher gets things done without worrying about niceties such as legality, you'll probably like Eisler's series too - though Eisler is a bit more descriptive and a bit less violent.
  2. 10
Hit Man af Lawrence Block (crazybatcow)
crazybatcow: Very similar main characters. Block's is a little less "gory" and is more like a series of vignettes than a plotted story.
  3. 21
    Løftet af Harlan Coben (fleagirl)
fleagirl: Big tough-guy with heart of tarnished gold, has knack for getting himself into trouble while getting others out.

Japantown: A Thriller (A Jim Brodie Thriller) af Barry Lancet (OneOfDem)

This is the first book by Lee Child in his Jack Reacher series. I use to be a big reader of this genre and know I have tried this series before. I grew away from the genre, but lately am being pulled back in. Decided to go back to the beginning and Jack Reacher did not disappoint.

Reacher was raised in the military and when he reached age he joined himself. He has cut his ties and is now wandering the country. He lands in Margrave Georgia and walks into a town run by the worst sort of people. Along the way he makes a few friends and together they bring the bad guys down. Typical of this genre, but it kept my interest and I will keep this series going as one of my new guilty pleasures. ( )

I certainly hope Child's writing chops improve in forthcoming books, because if I read something like, "It was as distinctive as the most distinctive thing you could think of" again, I'm done. Anyway, the book itself...not a bad set up, though Child can get overdetailed and repetitive at times. I felt, when the massive operation was revealed, that the book just completely fell apart. It got ridiculous and ended up loaded with plot holes, but really, the first two thirds, though a little long and overwrought, weren't horrible. I'll read another one. ( )

3.5. A fun, quick read. Jack Reacher is your typical Alpha male, and the book is full of helpless females needing his help. Reacher says a few times that he likes women with spirit, but then falls for a one-dimensional woman who needs saving. Hum. It is that kind of book though, and if you take it like that, it is fun.

I found it interesting that this book is written by a Brit. As a Brit myself, albeit one that has lived in the US for ten years now, it was interesting to see how well, IMO, Child captured the spirit of America. Not sure if it reads that way to a fully-fledged Yank, but I was impressed. I look forward to reading more Reacher books. ( )

This review was originally posted on Once Upon a ChapterFirst Sentence: I was arrested at Eno’s diner.

Super Brief Review: Amazing thriller that was incredibly hard to walk away from.

Favorite Quotes: Stevenson still on the ball with the pump-action.

“We got us a situation here, Mr. Reacher,” Finlay said. “A real situation.”

Layers of fences separated with plowed red earth. Hubble didn’t look up. I didn’t nudge him. It wasn’t the Magic Kingdom up ahead. – Jack Reacher on going to prison

After twenty years in Boston and six months in Margrave, there wasn’t a whole lot left that Finlay was ever going to raise an eyebrow at.

Slightly Longer Review: You know that you have a great book when you actually forget that the main protagonist is not the author. Jack Reacher was so real to me that I have a hard time remembering that Lee Child has written his story. Jack is a loner but he has a strong sense of justice. Luckily for him he is no longer tied to any agency and therefore is not held back by policy and red tape.

Jack makes a decision to hop off a Greyhound bus at a clover leaf exchange and make a trip down to Margrave, GA. It came close to being the worst mistake of his life. Jack is arrested and thrown in a cell. Apparently he murdered someone last night. Didn’t matter that he was in Florida at the time of the murder. He bides his time thinking that it is only a matter of time before they realize they have the wrong man. Jack is around long enough though to realize that something isn’t quite right in Margrave. He’s enjoying his freedom and doesn’t want to get caught up in business that means nothing to him. That is until Jack Reacher is taken by complete surprise (a difficult feat) and personally drawn into it.

Lee Child is brilliant. I don’t think I can put it any other way. The man deserves all the praise you’ve read about. I didn’t have anything figured out until Jack Reacher himself started explaining it to me. It was amazing. I kept thinking: “There’s something that will go wrong with this book. Some plot line left unresolved, something that will go unexplained.” I am so satisfied with this book that I can’t wait to devour the rest! I gave this book an adults only rating because it is gory and violent and there were parts that made me flinch. If you love a good thriller and have somehow missed Lee Child, do yourself a favor and get your hands on a copy today! ( )

Evaluate. Long experience taught me to evaluate and assess. When the unexpected gets dumped on you, don’t waste time. Don’t figure out how or why it happened. Don’t recriminate. Don’t figure out whose fault it is. Don’t work out how to avoid the same mistake next time. All that you do later. If you survive. First of all you evaluate. Analyze the situation. Identify the downside. Assess the upside. Plan accordingly. Do all that and you give yourself a better chance of getting through to the other stuff later.
