Hailsham seems like a pleasant English boarding school, far from the influences of the city. Its students are well tended and supported, trained in art and literature, and become just the sort of people the world wants them to be. But, curiously, they are taught nothing of the outside world and are allowed little contact with it. Within the grounds of Hailsham, Kathy grows from schoolgirl to young woman, but it's only when she and her friends Ruth and Tommy leave the safe grounds of the school (as they always knew they would) that they realize the full truth of what Hailsham is.… (mere)

I’d only ever heard good things about this and I’m happy to say that I agree, this is a good book. I did know the “twist” going in so that didn’t have too much impact on me but this is a really interesting book looking at really interesting and complex ideas. I would definitely recommend this. ( )

A Gothic tour de force... A meditation on mortality and lost innocence: a portrait of adolescence as that hinge moment in life when self-knowledge bring intimations of one's destiny, when the shedding of childhood dreams can lead to disillusionment, rebellion, newfound resolve or an ambivalent acceptance to a preordained fate.

I enjoyed Kazuo Ishiguro's novel "Never Let Me Go." It's an interesting mishmash of coming of age story and dystopian future where there are some ethical and moral dilemmas about how to treat illnesses like cancer.

The novel is very strong as it tells the story of Kathy, Ruth and Tommy as they grew up at a boarding school type place and their evolving relationships. I found the dystopian aspects of the story to be incredibly interesting, though the "big reveal" at the end seemed fairly obvious at that point. I would have liked to know more about the world and why everyone was so accepting of their fates.

That said, that's a minor complaint because this was definitely a novel I was eager to get back to every time I put it down. ( )

Frustrated by this book because it had so much potential but ends up failing to deliver.

90% of the book is about the coming of age of three students who all attend a school together. The other 10% is about an interesting dystopian concept of clones and organ donors.

The 90% portion does contain some well written observations of teen pettiness and the difficulty of falling in love and early relationships. But ultimately it's the 10% that is the interesting driving force of the plot and it's dangled in front of us like an alluring bait, a "reveal" that will make this book worth reading.

However, no reveal occurs. No explanation of this "dystopian" world occurs. I don't think you can even call this book dystopian because it never even attempts to do any world building. It feels manipulative the way we are baited along. A cop out. Like the author didn't have the creative imagination or guts to deliver.

I tried to think of a good analogy. Imagine if the original 1977 Star Wars movie came out, but it's about 3 teenagers on Tatooine. The "force" is alluded to a few times, and aliens. But nothing else. No lightsabers, jedis, aliens, Tusken Raiders, etc. Literally nothing in this giant world of Star Wars is discussed and instead we're locked into the banal world of teenagers.

Imagine if Harry Potter came out but instead of diving deep into the world of wizardry, JK Rowling just talks about three ordinary teenagers and sprinkles in some allusions to wizards. That keeps the reader interested, but she literally never explains it and just leaves us hanging. That's kind of what this book does. ( )

Ishiguro is extremely good at recreating the special, oppressive atmosphere of school (and any other institution, for that matter)—the cliques that form, the covert rivalries, the obsessive concern with who sat next to whom, who was seen talking to whom, who is in favor at one moment and who is not.

The eeriest feature of this alien world is how familiar it feels. It's like a stripped-down, haiku vision of children everywhere, fending off the chaos of existence by inventing their own rules.

"Never Let Me Go" is marred by a slapdash, explanatory ending that recalls the stilted, tie-up-all-the loose-ends conclusion of Hitchcock's "Psycho." The remainder of the book, however, is a Gothic tour de force that showcases the same gifts that made Mr. Ishiguro's 1989 novel, "The Remains of the Day," such a cogent performance.

This extraordinary and, in the end, rather frighteningly clever novel isn't about cloning, or being a clone, at all. It's about why we don't explode, why we don't just wake up one day and go sobbing and crying down the street, kicking everything to pieces out of the raw, infuriating, completely personal sense of our lives never having been what they could have been.
