The first of its kind for the Indonesian language, Bahasa Tetanggaku is a three-stage series for secondary school students, strongly emphasizing a communicative approach to language learning. Grammar points are given ample coverage, and new words and phrases are introduced in the context of specific situations: meeting people, eating, telling the time, school activities, etc. Topics and language are further explored through clearly recorded sample dialogues on the audio cassette tapes. The tapes include photocopiable listening and reading comprehension tests, keyed to the subjects of the various chapters. A CD-ROM, Interactive Indonesian, is also available for Stage 1. The books are richly illustrated with both color photographs and cartoons, and cultural notes, role-playing games and vocabulary puzzles add an element of fun and challenge to language learning.
