Michael Pearce writes an excellent and droll story no matter the book. It is impossible to review the books individually as the Mamur Zapt series is one long recounting of adventures and personal vignettes in a time period long gone and far away. Egypt during the british "occupation" (since that is what it really was, invited or not) and in the very early 1900s. Pearce has a gentle feel for the people of the country as well as for the British, and he writes with a humor and kindness for people in the circumstances they find themselves caught up in. I heartily recommend the entire series. In fact within my library are three different series written by Michael Pearce, all of which I heartily recommend. :) ( )
