Ray and his best friend, Manny, close ever since they met in juvie almost twenty years ago, have a great scam going: With a couple of fake badges and some DEA windbreakers they found at a secondhand store, they pose as federal agents and rip off small-time drug dealers, taking their money and drugs and disappearing before anyone is the wiser. It's the perfect sting: the dealers they target are too small to look for revenge and too guilty to call the police, nobody has to die, nobody innocent gets hurt, and Ray and Manny score plenty. But it can't last forever. Eventually, they choose the wrong mark and walk out with hundreds of thousands of dollars, and a heavy hitter, who is more than willing to kill to get his money back, is coming after them. Now Ray couldn't care less about the score. He wants out---out of the scam, out of a life he feels like he never chose. Whether the victim of his latest job---not to mention his partner---will let him is another question entirely. Dennis Tafoya brings a rich, passionate, and accomplished new voice to the explosive story of a small-time crook with everything to lose inDope Thief, his outstanding hardboiled debut.… (mere)

I did not enjoy the first 200 pages of this book, which were about two losers ripping off drug dealers. Yet, the book turned interesting when one of the losers meets someone special, sees the light, and rejoins humanity in a robust way. ( )

An excellent job done by this former E.M.T. from Philly, on his debut effort.A noir-ish setting. ( )

This is a good debit. Tafoya pulls off the tricky feat of getting you to care about somebody that appears to have no redeeming qualities. Dope Thief tells the tale of a couple na'er do wells that make their current living robbing drug dealers. When one of their escapades goes off the rail they are forced to evaluate their lives. While this book always has a ring of authenticity, the second half does get a little hokey. Still, a very good read by a very promising author. ( )

Excellent read. Full of morally flawed characters who carry many demons: the things they have done; the choices they have made and the ones they wished they had made and the choices that felt like they had no choice at all; and regret, lots of regret. ( )

I couldn't stop reading this novel. It has been days since I finished it, and it still resonates with me. The out of control actions of the main characters, then their scramble to save themselves, and a beyond touching turn of events make this a highly recommended read. Add in great imagery, and action packed drama laced with guns and dope, and you've got the makings of greatness. Don't miss it! ( )
