This is a good story, It’s not amazing so I don’t understand the Caldecott medal but it is still an enjoyable read with fun illustrations. ( )

The classic tale of the everyman who achieves his goal by assembling a team of social outcasts with superpowers. Retold by the author of Swallows and Amazons. Illustrations very much of an era with Terry Gilliam's cartooning for Monty Python, but child-friendly. On the long side, so probably grade 3 is the sweet spot. ( )

wonderful, long, old folktale from Russia ( )

A simple Russian tale of the unfavored son who goes on a quest. Finding a ship that flies, he comes upon many country people who assist him and others along the way. Eventually, with the help of his friends in the flying ship, he is able to win the hand of the Czar's daughter. Though this is a Caldecott Medal book, as usual, the illustrations of Uri Schulevitz are colorful and appealing. Though, I thought the story was wonderful for little ones who can learn to appreciate a tale of helping others in succeeding a goal. ( )

Illustrated versions of an old Russian tale in witch a simple man is finally favored and meets the exact right people who will help him marry a princess. I didn't care for this one. ( )
